More Babies Are Being Born!

출산율은 한 명의 여성이 평생 동안 낳을 것으로 예상되는 아기 수를 말해요.

The birth rate means the number of babies one woman is expected to have in her lifetime.

2015년부터 출산율이 계속 줄어들었는데, 2023년에는 한 명당 평균 0.72명의 아기만 태어나서 가장 낮은 기록을 세웠어요. 그런데 좋은 소식이 있어요! 지난해 출산율이 0.75명으로 조금 올랐을 거라고 정부가 예상했어요. 만약 그렇다면, 9년 만에 출산율이 올라간 거예요!

Since 2015, the birth rate has kept going down, and in 2023, it was only 0.72 babies per woman, the lowest ever. But here’s some good news! The government thinks last year’s birth rate might have gone up a little to 0.75. If that’s true, it’s the first time the birth rate has increased in 9 years!

정부는 지난해 1월부터 11월까지 태어난 아기가 전년도보다 3% 늘었다고 했어요. 그래서 9년 만에 출생아 수가 다시 늘어난 게 확실하다고 해요!

The government says that from January to November last year, 3% more babies were born compared to the year before. This makes it clear that the number of babies being born has gone up after 9 years!

2023년에 태어난 아기는 약 24만 2천 명으로, 2022년보다 7천 명 더 많아요. 이렇게 아기가 더 많이 태어난 건 9년 만이에요!

About 242,000 babies were born in 2023, which is 7,000 more than in 2022. It’s the first increase in 9 years!

왜 이런 변화가 생겼을까요? 각 지역에서는 아기를 낳는 가족을 돕기 위한 여러 가지 지원을 하고 있고, 결혼하는 사람도 늘고 있기 때문이에요. 코로나가 시작된 2020년부터 결혼이 줄었었지만, 2023년에는 다시 늘기 시작했어요.

Why did this change happen? Local governments are giving more help to families having babies, and more people are getting married. Since the start of COVID-19 in 2020, fewer people were getting married, but in 2023, the number of marriages started going up again.

하지만 어떤 전문가들은 출산율이 이렇게 올라간 게 잠깐일 수도 있다고 말해요. 결혼하는 사람이 늘어서 아기가 더 많이 태어났지만, 이게 진짜 환경이 좋아져서 사람들이 아기를 더 많이 낳고 싶어졌다고 보기는 어렵다는 거예요.

However, some experts think the increase in the birth rate might only last a short time. They believe the rise is mostly because more people are getting married now, not because more people feel ready to have children in general.

정부는 여전히 아기가 적게 태어나고 나이가 많은 사람이 늘어나면서, 20년 뒤에는 우리나라에서 37%가 넘는 사람들이 어른이 될 거라고 예상하고 있어요.

The government is still worried because even though more babies are being born right now, the population is getting older faster. In 20 years, they think more than 37% of people in the country will be elderly.
