Despite the subzero weather, Gwanghwamun Square was packed with people.
Wearing thick outerwear and hats pulled down tight, participants called for an investigation into President Yoon Suk-yeol on charges of treason.
["Arrest him, arrest him."]
[Lee Hee-seong / Seocho District, Seoul: "The quickest way to prevent chaos is a swift impeachment. That’s why it’s essential to ensure the impeachment of the president is upheld this winter."]
As evening fell, light sticks appeared, and the march continued to the Myeongdong Station area.
["Invalid impeachment! (Invalid impeachment!)"]
About 1 kilometer away from the rally calling for impeachment, a protest opposing President Yoon's impeachment was held.
Participants waved Korean and American flags, arguing that the declaration of martial law was legitimate and insisting the impeachment should be nullified.
To prepare for clashes between participants from both rallies, police were stationed throughout Gwanghwamun.
With another march scheduled around Gyeongbokgung Station on the 31st and continued impeachment-related protests expected for the foreseeable future, the government has taken steps to ensure safety.
The government plans to deploy safety personnel at Gwanghwamun and Anguk stations every weekend to monitor risks and prevent accidents.
